What is Career Development?

Career development is the process that an individual takes to grow and evolve within their profession by advancement, acquiring new skills, and creating a purpose in the work they are undertaking. The process of career development involves goal setting, continuing education, training, new workplace assignments and responsibilities, and social networking in your designated field or industry.

Why is Career Development Important?

This is a common question I receive from many of my employees and career coaching clients. Career development is important because it allows individuals to continuously improve their skills and knowledge, which in turn leads to better job opportunities and higher wages.

If you want to take ownership of your career trajectory and set yourself on track to earning significantly more year over year, then it is imperative that you implement some form a career development plan to get you closer to your goals.

Who Primarily Controls Your Career Development?

To put this simply, it is mostly determined by you and your motivation to develop your career. There are many ways to enhance career development. One way is to keep up with current trends and opportunities in your current field of work.

Make a list of each of the job roles above and below your current position. What responsibilities and or qualifications are necessary for each of those positions? Are there any specific certifications or courses that you can achieve that would fast track your ascension?

In mapping these simple exercises, your engagement as an employee and within your organization will improve. Allowing you to build a career foundation that will last throughout the life of your career. Many small and large employers consider career development as an important role in talent management and growth for their organizations.

How do Communication Skills Help in Career Development?

Communications skills are important to career development because they help with developing a strong working relationship between the employee and employer. By communicating effectively, employees and their employers build trust and transparency which leads to higher retention, productivity benefits, and an overall good organizational culture.
